Ubuntu 14.04 guest: Shared folders /mnt/hgfs doesn't work (VMWare Workstation 9)

I've read a lot of posts on the internet about this, apparently there is something incompatible in the vmhgfs module that it won't compile with my kernel (3.11.0-20-generic). I'm using VMware Tools 9.2.4 build-1398046 for Linux. Here are some threads that discuss it:

I tried everything above (except the open version of tools) but nothing works for this issue (although reportedly some of the patches worked well for past issues) in Workstation 9. Apparently this has been fixed in the latest Fusion. Is VMWare going to release a fix or a later version of tools for VMWare Workstation 9?
