Connecting SmartCard Reader to the Guest

$

Hi,

I am using vmware workstation 15.5 pro. My host OS is Windows 10. I have to connect a SmartCard reader to the Guest OS. I don't want to share the connection between the host and the guest. I am trying to disable sharing but can't do it.

I have added the following line to config.ini

usb.ccid.useSharedMode = "FALSE"

The usbarb.rules file is as follows:

{

  "version": 1,

  "rules": []

}

I checked the .vmx file and couldn't find any entry for "autoconnect". When I go to VM --> Settings --> Hardware --> USB Controller, I can't find the option "Automatically Select New USB Devices" so that I could deselect it.

How can I make sure that the smart card reader is not automatically selected. The problem is that with automatic selection, it uses USB CCID whereas the smart card reader which I am using needs a different driver.

VM Settings for the smoothest performance (and work in general)

Hi,

I've got to prepare 3 laptops with Windows 10 and most probably Manjaro Xfce.

This will be just a "test drive" so I'll use two older laptops with i5-4300M and i3-5005U CPUs, integrated graphics, and my "workstation" with i7-7700 and GTX1080.

I know that all of these processors feature both VT-x and EPT, so I guess I should check this box in VM settings. But I have no idea what are:

  1. CPU performance counters
  2. input–output memory management unit (IOMMU)

And BTW if you have any word of advice, also thank you in advance!

The most important part is that Windows will be running some lower priority services and the most resource demanding tasks are going to be run in unix VM. And no, it can't be other way around

Many thanks

Can I setup and configure Domain Controller and DHCP with NAT or Bridged?

$

Hi,

I installed Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 on VMware Workstation.

The Network connection of both are LAN Segment and because of LAN Segment, Internet is not working in both VMs.

Domain Controller and DHCP configured successfully on Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 is a DHCP Client.

Now I have to setup same lab with Internet access.

That’s why I installed another Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10.

Be it NAT or Bridged Network Connection, can I setup and configured Domain Controller and DHCP?

I accessed router using 192.168.0.1 and I found.

DHCP is enabled at the router and IP range defined is 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.110.

What should be the IP range so that I can assign it manually for domain controller?

Initially I assigned 192.168.0.111 with default gateway 192.168.0.120 and primary DNS 192.168.0.1 and secondary DNS 8.8.8.8 but no Internet access.

I hope I explained my question well.

Hi folks,

I am not able to copy/paste anything in one of my guest vms, while other vms are working fine. I am using vmware workstation 14 Pro.

I have tried re installing vmtools many times, even uninstall and reinstall completely, tried guest isolation options check mark/ un check, but doenst work. also, tried repairing VMware workstation host also.

I am interested to see in logs, if i could find some clue why only 1 vm is affected, any idea how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

When starting a VM in Workstation I get an error message as shown below:

Error.PNG

When I go into sound settings in Virtual Machine Settings I see 'Connected' un-ticked and 'Connect at power on' ticked. If I tick the connected tick-box, click OK and go back to the guest I then have sound.  I have tried in three different Linux guests and the same thing happens.

I'm running VMWare Workstation 15.5.1 build-15018445 on Windows 10 Pro 18362.476. My motherboard is an MSI X370 Pro with Realtek ALC1220 HD Audio.

I'm running version 6.0.1.8619 of the Realtek HD Audio Manager.

I have Stereo Mix enabled as shown below:

VM Management on Surface Pro

Hi,

I have a Surface Pro (5).  I can run VMs on it with Player 15 without issue.  If I manage a VM with Workstation, and do something like Clean Up Disks, it pretty much destroys the Surface.  I get a BSOD, then the surface won't boot.  I have gone through troubleshooting with Microsoft, to no avail, and they sent me a new Surface.  I thought it might have been an anomaly, so I tried it on the new surface.  The same thing happened again.  So again, MS sent me a new Surface.

Has anyone out there encountered this?  I want to be able to manage VMs on the Surface, since this is my work machine and I use it for business travel to clients.  Any insight anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

VMWare Workstation 15.5.x Priority bugs

$

Both 15.5.x release so far have shared this same bug.

With previous 14-15 versions when a vmx was set to Normal grabbed and Low ungrabbed via the gui my vmxs would show

priority.grabbed = "normal"
priority.ungrabbed = "idle"

and process priority was properly handled.

Starting with 15.5.0 and now again with 15.5.1 I get a repeating error the first time I run a vmx created previously but not yet run by 15.5+,

Value "idle" for variable "priority.ungrabbed" is not a valid value.

After this it sets the entry in the vmx to

priority.ungrabbed = ""

Then after changing the option to low via the 15.5+ gui the vmx shows priority.ungrabbed = "low" but the priority always remains at normal when grabbed or not. Amusingly I found that setting the priority to High while grabbed and Normal while ungrabbed works like I wanted all along so that when it is grabbed it remains at normal priority (despire being set to high) and then ungrabbed it now runs as low priority (despite being set to normal)...

Is VMware Workstation Pro 15.5.1 compliant with Windows 10 Pro 64 bit release 1909?

Dear Sir or Madam,

Everything is said in the title.

Can we upgrade from Windows 10 release 1903 to Windows 10 release 1909 with VMware Workstation Pro 15.5.1?

I look forward to reading you.

Yours faithfully

PS: I have already upgraded my OS and everything seems to be OK

Connecting Kali to Wifi, Host has two network cards?

$

Hello,

I have found many posts regarding connecting vmware guest OS Kali to wireless USB on the Host PC. However, I haven't found an answer to connecting Guest to Host Wifi.

Allow me to explain;

I have a Host PC Running Windows 10, the Host PC has two network cards installed, one is a LAN or Wired connection, the other is a wireless. I'm not using a USB Wireless.

Currently I have the Virtual Network for vmware connected to the wired network, the guest Operating system Kali is using a bridged connection from the hosts wired network.

I have the wireless network disabled on the host PC, such as I have seen in other postings. So my question is how to have the guest operating system see and use the wireless network from the Host, while maintaining the wired connection.

Solutions I have seen, assume that the host is using a USB wireless.

Thank you to anyone that replies.

With me - update from 15.5 to 15.5.1 not working - used the full trial instead

FWIW...

In my case...

Workstation Pro 15.5 reported a new version (15.5.1) and I selected to run the update.

I was looking at a "Finished updating VMware Tools for Solaris" panel for some 5 minutes or so.

Nothing happened.

Then I discovered there was a setup panel, hidden behind others. Okay, I missed that one.

I clicked on [Next] and got a popup "Stop the following process or processes..."

Clicked [OK]

Got back to the setup panel.

After a few tries back and forth, I clicked on [Cancel]  and downloaded / used the full trial for the update from:

https://www.vmware.com/go/getworkstation-win

File: VMware-workstation-full-15.5.1-15018445.exe (541 MB)

It requires to enter the key.

Things went fine after that.

The VMware Authorization Service will not start.  In the System event log the error is:

The VMware Authorization Service service terminated with the following service-specific error:

%%6000009

This started after I upgraded from Workstation Pro 15.0 to 15.5.

My computer is running Windows 10 Version 1903.

I've tried running the service as the local Administrator account, did not solve the problem.

I've tried changing the properties on C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmware-authd.exe to run as Administrator.

Mouse / Keyboard frozen on host after upgrading to 15.5.1-15018445 (from 15.5.0-14665864)

So I took the offer to upgrade from Workstation. Ran the wizard with all the defaults. The only thing I didn't check (I usually do) was the enhanced Keyboard driver (that requires restart). The upgrade went through successfully. I even used some VMs.

Then I had to restart my host and when it came back, behold, keyboard and mouse were unusable).

I tried connecting an external usb keyboard; didn't work.

An external mouse did work.

After I removed 15.5.1-15018445 and restarted, I was able to re-gain keyboard use. Anyone else experiencing something similar?
