Questions on managing Guest OS in VMWare workstation - concerns from IT Admins

We are looking at deploying VM workstation to developers however the IT administrators have some concerns.  I was wondering if there are known best practices to address these?

1.  sharing of vm images over network and on shared drive locations:

Is there a library service where we can store images?  Maybe we force developers to only run from their own workstations and never store images on shared drives?

2.  up-keep of security patching (Microsoft, Virus, Java, Adobe,...etc)

Is it possible to schedule images to startup every night so they can automatically install OS updates and application specific patches?  Any other solutions to ensure images are maintained up to date?

3.  VM sprawl... unmanageable number of VMs that are not centrally administered; not considered an enterprise solution

very similar to #1:  We are proposing that each team manages their own images.   tTis is only for development purposes so we can use different tool stack and test different system configuration and OS languages.

4.  Network Access:  They want to block network access.  This is critical for us.

Comments, suggestions?
