How to fix temporary pause on every folder open?

I recently moved this VM to a portable HDD. It was working fine for a few days. Today is started freezing when I open a folder in the guest OS (Windows 7 x64). Then after about 10 seconds, it would continue. I notice writing on the disk stopped each time (the disk light stopped). I tried vmware-vdiskmanager -R and it reported no errors.

More Info

  • VMWare Workstation 7.1.6.
  • Host is Windows 8.1 x64.
  • I've been using this VM for at least a year.
  • I left a copy on the internal HDD, and it still works without this problem.
  • Windows Error checking (Properties > Tools > Error checking > Check) reports no errors on portable HDD.
  • I have portable HDD running on a long HD Tune Error Scan and so far (75%) it's all green (no errors).
  • There is plenty of space on the portable HDD.
  • I think this is happening on other kinds of operations, like when I click the start button. (But I don't remember - I was focused on the folder issue.)

I'm suspicious some files other than the vmdk got corrupt overnight. Is there anyway to check and repair those? (I don't know very much about VMware.)

Any other suggestions? (I have already tried google.) My last resort is delete the portable and then copy from the internal again.
