Can't get network access to a RHEL 6.4 vm from a RHEL 6.4 host using VmWare 9

I'm having problems getting the networking setup on a RHEL 6.4 virtual machine.

I have a host computer with RHEL 6.4 x86_64 operating system running VmWare Workstation 9. On the host computer I have a VM running RHEL 6.4 x86_64 as well. The vm works fine except for the networking. I'm trying to make the vm accessible on the local network just like the host with static IP addresses.

The host ip is 192.168.40.10 and the vm IP is 192.168.40.20.

No matter what I try I can't get bidirectional access. I can connect out but not in etc. I've tried bridging, NAT, and specifying specific adapters.

I've gotten this to work with a Windows host but not on linux.

Am I missing something? I'm new to virtual servers.
