Guys,
I'd like to report a bug in VMware workstation 11.0.0
My setup is as follows.
I have two 4k monitors, Dell UP3214Q
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=210-ACBL
hooked up to an nvidia quadro k2200 video card which can drive the two 4K monitors.
The monitors, when running at full 4k resolution @ 60Hz are desiged to actually work like to monitors working side by side inside the single monitor frame in a dual tile mode. Each tile has a resolution of 1920x2160. Here's the output from xrandr -q so you can see what I'm talking about.
[adler@office01 ~]$ xrandr -q

So here's the problem with VMware workstation 11. BTW, I'm running on a linux host, fedora 21.
I startup a guest, it doesn't matter if its linux or windows guest. (I'm running fedora 21 as one guest and windows 7 as another guest). The non-full screen resolution that the guests start up as is 2560x1600. I then click on the full screen button. What happens is the vmware guest display opens up a full screen on one of the tiles (half monitor section of the screen) but does not get the proper size correctly. The verticle size is OK, but the horizontal size is too wide. See attached picture. When I click on expanding the guest display to the next monitor over, it expands the the adjacent tile (1/2 monitor) and fills the half monitor correctly. The two halves of the full screen display, one for each tile (which VMWare thinks is a separate monitor), don't line up right.
Now.. here's the trick. If the initial non-fullscreen resolution of the guest is 1920x1400 or less, then the full screen works fine. See 2nd attachment.
All this is a mess due to the way xrandr or more precisely, the randr protocol is digesting the dual tiling configuration of the Dell 4K monitor, making the OS think that each monitor is two monitors in one, which makes full screen mode uggly for applications like VMware, but I can deal with it as long as vmware treats each tile correctly. At least for now, I have a work around which is to make sure my vmware guest has a display resolution of 1920x1400 or less which then has the guest display resize correctly to full screen on one of the half monitor tiles and then I can click on the expand display over multiple displays button which then fills the full screen of one monitor.
Anyhow... this is a bug which should get inserted into the vmware bug reporting system at vmware....
Cheers. Steve.
