I have been having a problem for a long time now where my host machine will become unresponsive after a guest machine has been up for a while. Im assuming the guest is under load doing updates or something but it doesn't make any sense to my why the host is behaving the way it is. I had this problem on 2 different computers running W7 as well as a third computer running W8.1 using both Workstation 9 and now Workstation 10.
The current host is a Quad core i5-4570 with 32 GB of ram. There is only 1 guest running which is only configured for 2 GB of ram and 2 core.
What happens is that the host suddenly becomes extremely sluggish. I then try to pause or revert the guest to a snapshot but it takes 30 seconds or more to get anything to respond to input. The instant the guest is down, the host is back to normal.
I have tried changing the affinity for the VMware running process when the problem occurs and if I uncheck CPU 0, the host starts working again and the guest still appears to works. If I restart the guest after that it complains about the cpu not being available.
I don't understand why the guest is causing a problem for the host when Im only using 2 of the 4 core with very little else going on. All the VMs are running on SSDs. There are times I have 5 or 6 guests running and don't have any problems on the host so I don't understand what is causing this.
Anyone have any ideas?
