Solaris tools problems in Workstation 9.0.3

I upgraded Workstation from 9.0.2 to 9.0.3 and now tools fails to startup cleanly on system boot:

I see the following in /var/svc/log/milestone-multi-user:default.log:

Executing legacy init script "/etc/rc2.d/S05vmware-tools".

/etc/rc2.d/S05vmware-tools: syntax error at line 372: `modname=$' unexpected

My host OS is Windows 7. My guest is Solaris 10  8/11.

I initially got failures installing tools and used the workaround at this link to complete installation without error:

Any ideas on how to fix ?
